The Eredivisie was established in the 1956-1957 season. Dutch football had 'gone professional' two years earlier (1954). Eredivisie was the new name for the first nationwide, professional football league in The Netherlands. Since the 2002 relegation of Sparta Rotterdam the traditional 'Big Three' (Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV) are the only three clubs to always have played in the Eredivisie since the start in 1956. Dutch football fans tend to ignore the names of the sponsors completely and refer to the respective leagues simply as Eredivisie and First Division.
What more should PSV do to make their confrontations against Feyenoord and Ajax acknowledged 'Classics'? The list of honors of the Eindhoven club is now longer than Feyenoord's - and in the past two decades PSV grabbed at least as many Dutch championships as Ajax. Ajax's record against PSV in the past ten seasons can hardly be described with any other word than 'terrible'. Philips Stadium is packed during every home game and PSV have remarkable club history of more than 90 years. PSV may not hail from an attractive city in the west, they may not have the swagger of the average Amsterdammer and they may lack a traditional shirt (their red and white strip has had numerous different designs over the years), but they embarrass Ajax in the ArenA on an almost yearly basis and were extremely close to reaching the Champions League final of 2005 (AC Milan's last minute goal in the semi final in Eindhoven knocked them out).
Feyenoord's impressive honors include fourteen Dutch championships, ten Dutch cups, two UEFA Cups and - thanks to Swedish striker Ove Kindvall's legendary goal against Celtic at Milan's San Siro - Europe's most prestigious football trophy, the European Champions Cup. Feyenoord were the first Dutch side to win it (1970). The World Cup for club teams followed the same year. But trophies and titles are not the main concern of the average Feyenoord fan. Alright: Ajax have more silverware - so what? Feyenoord fans are proud of other things. Their impressive home ground, for example, officially named Stadion Feyenoord but known to everyone as De Kuip ('The Tub', literally). It is generally regarded as the most authentic and atmospheric football temple in Holland. Quite typically for Rotterdam's working man's identity, the fans built their home themselves: the stadium was an unemployment relief project during the economic crisis of the 1930s.
Here starts the history tour of Ajax, one of the most famous footballclubs in the world. Ajax is a club with a rich history. It all started with a group of friends who got together in their sparetime. In a century the club grew from this group of friends to a worldfamous club, known for it's beautiful and attractive football. In total, Ajax won the national championship 27 times, en won 25 important international prices, which makes the club belong to the best in Europe. Nowadays the club is housed in the Ultra modern Arena in Amsterdam Zuid-Oost, which seats 51,300 people and has a retractable roof. Who would have thought that the club of a couple of friends with a leather ball would grow to become a multimillion euro business 100 years later. After Ronald Koeman's resignation, his assistants Ruud Krol and Tonny Bruins Slot take over. With this duo at the helm, Ajax return to their winning ways in the Dutch league. Yet, it is not the solution the managing board had in mind. Danny Blind is appointed head coach on 14 March.
